The Grande Bois-Apocalypse 2012

Well as if you can't already figure out the great apocalypse of 2012 didn't happen. The Mayans and that pesky Nostradamus are a bunch of blowhards.Who has the nerve to predict the future and demise of the world anyway? With that said I can proudly say that one good thing did come from all the doomsday hype, and it was this sophomore release from Finland's own Grande Bois.Up until just a few weeks ago I had never even heard of this trio from the northern reaches of Scandinavia. They recently joined my favorite surf instro hangout Surf Guitar 101 and announced their newest release in hopes of stirring up a buzz in the surf world...It worked! After sampling just a few of their tunes I knew I had to review this properly for the die-hard fans of this blog.If the apocalypse did happen this collection of tunes should have without a doubt been the soundtrack for our demise. The composers of this doomsday juggernaut are Veikko Korhonen-GuitarMan,Marko "Spuge"Hamalainen -DrumMan,and Ville Sevon-BassMan.
From the first chord blast of "The Crawler" you know damn well this isn't going to be lush piece to romance your girl to.In much the manner of Huevous Rancheros, the Grande Bois dole out no nonsense surf rock assault. The difference between HR and the GB is the guys from Finland are looking for blood  at whatever cost. As if the Huevous Rancheros connection couldn't be stronger the distinctive twang on "Bottom Of The Wave" will certainly bludgeon my point across. Some seriously nasty yet fun guitar work. The western gallop seems to be to be the driving pulse behind the "Human Heart" along with a healthy dose of double picking vehemence.Things really start to get chaotic with the aptly titled "March Of The Undead Army".At first this track had me recalling Chicago's own Spies Who Surf jazzy surf styling ,but things soon turn dark when monstrous dialogue of a zombie takeover is revealed to the listener. Well paced and without a doubt conjures up a undead army like song tile says. With almost a downright deliberate espionage vibe "Stalker" is without a doubt my favorite track on this album. Starting off slow and mysterious then morphing into a sax fueled sleaze grinder ala The Fathoms, but wait things get weirder GuitarMan stomps onto what I can only assess as "monster guts getting squished" whatever the effect is it sounds uber cool and lends itself well to the song at hand. A welcomed surprise was to find out that the next song " Surf Party" wasn't the Astronauts surf classic. No disrespect to that song, but at this point in the game I prefer fresh new ideas whenever possible. This track probably won't blow the minds of surf guitar geeks across the globe with it's basic song structure, but most of the time simple works better.Sure the guitar work is wailing up a storm,I'm almost inclined to believe guitarist Korhonen has had a hard rock/metal background. This last statement is even more apparent with the Maiden-ish "Attack Of The Tentacles [They Are Coming!]" creepy and alarming with intense keyboard work by special guest Turkka "The Humanoid" Vuorinen. Wizardly guitar work, and viking chants make for a testosterone rush, and this one is literally spewing it all over place. If your waiting for the sun to come out you'll have put on a different record, because this album is grim and despicable from here on out.Mid tempo in pace "Harvester" plods along with deadly intent, sure the guitar playing sounds harmless at times, but unhinged reverb explosions slice and dice with accurate dismemberment.Ding! Dong! Who's there? Vroom! Vroom! the "Pyscho Loose" is bound to give you nightmares unless your the psycho.Probably the most intense powerful and hard driving track of the beast of a album. Possibly borrowing a little from Dick Dale's "Scalped" [maybe] "Pyscho" is as energetic as a serial killer in paradise. There is a amazing bonus track that I have decided to not review as to not give too much away.Let me just say this "It's Fucking Amazing!" If you don't want to buy this album as soon as possible,I have failed at my job here.If you took the bait like I planned I promise that you will not be disappointed.Check out the album preview below.

Reverb Junkies [DVD]

Finally!!! That's what I said when I first heard about this film documentary produced by fellow junkie and all around nice guy Steve Seagren. It goes without saying that while watching this movie I was grinning from ear to ear.I mean this film features a virtual who's who in our small but strong surf music community world wide. Most of the people featured in interviews here are also members of the SurfGuitar 101 forum so this is basically a film made by a friend for his friends and family of a sort. This film covers all you need to know about surf music including it's history,it's roots, choice of reverb amps, guitars, the movie Pulp Fiction and it's impact on rekindling what some say the start of the third wave of surf, the colorful characters that embrace this genre with their time, dedication and in Unsteady Freddie's case his wallet as he doles out tons of cash traveling the globe just to see a surf festival,or a single show. Admittedly I'd would probably be just like him,but my wallet sadly doesn't go that deep. The real treat here is the music, and let me tell you it's packed to hilt with live performances by such acts like The Ghastly Ones,The Dynotones,The Tequila Worms,Satan's Pilgrims,Thee Swank Bastards,Space Cossacks and,Daikaiju [that's a hard task to do if you've ever seen them live],plus many, many more familiar names. My only slight complaint about this documentary is nobody even bothered to mention to two biggest names in the third wave of surf music Man Or Astro-Man? and Los Straitjackets. These two bands in my honest opinion reached out to more people across the world and opened up the flood gates to a many reverb junkies that still roam this earth to this day. With that being said this is still a phenomenal hour and half of reverb madness that each and every surf musician, and fan must own. Just in case you've been living under a rock,or been in a super long coma you probably have heard of the Messer Chups. Widely known by surf instro fans all over the world for their wild ,wacky, and oh so trashy take on instrumental surf never envisioned before.Hailing from Russia Oleg Gitarkin is the principal songwriter, and what a dynamic writer he is.Messer Chups was originally a side project of Oleg's 90's Messer fur Frau Muller, but it seems as the Chups have been the center focus especially since the shockingly beautiful pin-up girl of modern surf Svetlana Zombierella Nagaeva aka Zombiegirl joined the band in 2005 with the Hyena Surfari release. Now some fans have quietly mumbled to themselves that they liked the ultra weird pre Zombiegirl era of Messer Chups. Before she joined the band ,Messer Chups were basically a studio band and Oleg could toss in any strange noises,or change the tempo of a song on the drop of a dime. This mad formula wouldn't work anymore if he wanted "A real band" to play live.I mean who could keep up with that?If you've heard the earlier albums you'll know what I'm talking about. Oleg even  went and recruited a real drummer[Denis Kupstov] eventually.Years have passed and the onslaught of new albums never ceases. If you're a new fan of the group you have a lot of catching up to do. Especially if you're a completest and as if that wasn't enough they have even released yet another spin off band called The Bonecollectors which features Zombierella's vocals, yet the Chups have been sprinkling in her vocals for years...sound confusing yet? Over the last few releases people have been noticing that Messer Chups are now a straight up surf band.A dark mysterious surf band, but still a surf band. This album has a tad bit more of a swinging vibe at times, yet maintains it's evil undertones with a macabre sense of humor. Why is it that so much of this album reminds me The Fathoms,or it Four Piece Suit? yes they slathered in some down and dirty saxophone to several tracks "Padre Pizzicato" is a stand up sleazed out track. They even do a UK crime drama  TV theme "Human Jungle" that Four Piece Suit did on their debut album.I think my previous suspicions are dead on.One of my favorite moments on this record is the dialog between the prince of darkness himself and Zombierella in the  ironically named track "Dracula Hates Photoshoots". Another amusing surprise is "Black Saddle" yet another cover of a cover made somewhat famous by 60's South Bay surf band The Revelairs. The song originally hailed from a short lived western TV series.Yet another outstanding cover done here is the commonly covered Earle Hagen track Harlem Nocturne.A  sax driven version of  Gershon Kingsley's classic Popcorn devilishly renamed "Popcorno Revenge" ends the album as a bonus track. With that said the true talent here is the original music that Oleg seems to effortlessly doles out.If the Messer Chups were to ever be embraced by the mainstream media I would be shocked, but it would be a well earned as they are probably the most productive surf instro band of the last 12 years or so.

The Twang-O-Matics -Fretboard Mojo [2013]

As promised last summer Norwegian surf  vikings are back with their debut full length album entitled "Fretboard Mojo".When the guys released their first 7'' inch Get Hip With... I instantly knew this band had something unique to add the already vibrantly colorful world of surf instro music. Kickstarting this musical journey is the fuzz and thumping "Boss Lady" a punky jerky tune with a semi-spy mystic.I couldn't help, but wish this song was a tad bit longer though.Continuing on with the mystery is the dark menace of "The Ghost" that sounds like perfect music to walk through a graveyard in a old abandoned western settlement town.Persona Non Grata has a almost rockabilly surf n'spy thing going on with spiffy dash of Arabic percussion to spice things up.The menacing bass, and dangerous guitar releases fear as if being chased by a couple of hired hitmen. Starting off with a distinct euro driven rhythm "Rat Tap" morphs into a not so lean ,but mean killing machine of fuzzy/ reverb guitar ace. Galloping up with mustang power is "Tennessee Deadshot" a rockabilly infused spaghetti western number that is sure to squint your eyes in the sun with a Backwoods cigar clinched tight in your teeth. The Euro beat drive of "Fez Inferno" is a scorcher. This track gives me that's 90's Surf Trio vibe,I can't quit place a specific song, but if you're familiar with band you''ll hear it as well. The frenzied guitar parts really cement the whole blazin' inferno effect that this song was named. Test Drive as you may have surmised is a quick paced thrill ride with a intense accelerated pace.Let's burn some rubber!! Slowing the pace down a tad bit is yet another western beat banger called "The Chosen One" a modern day display of  what riding a electrified horse may feel like.Though the name of "Spy-The Mystery Man" may suggest espionage  I couldn't shake from it sounding like another spaghetti western inspired track with it's deep dry twang, and it's persistent cowboy clomp and stomp.Harem Headlock, now that song title totally lives up to it's name with it's exotic Middle Eastern melodies, and rhythmic guitar structures.Reminds me of the Phantom Four. Transitioning to a more Spanish flavor is the well arranged mini masterpiece that is "El Hombre Sin Clair" not quite pretty, but I hear a hint of a hot summer romance within and a thunderous climax. Saucy indeed!. The album closer "The Twangster" is as to be expected, real heavily choked  full of twang, and true grit.If cowgirls were go-go girls this would get them grinding in there Daisy Dukes for sure. So far so good from the boys dreaming of surf in Norway.
If you live on this side of the world do yourself a favor, and pick up this fine album,or CD at http://www.doublecrownrecords.com/the-twang-o-matics-fretboard-mojo-cd/

Who's says that Craigslist is only good for hooking up with strangers, and buying used musical  instruments? It also serves as a means to acquire fellow musicians with like minded tastes and goals.Well that's just what guitarist Edwin Cleverdon, and bassist Jeff Waites did. They sparked up a connection seeking a new venture into instrumental rock music.Eventually two other recruits Ken Adams on drums, and Robert "Rowbear' Huffman on the keyboard. For those of you that are interested to know Huffman also played with Tuscaloosa,AL own legendary surf group The Penetrators under the alas of "Bobby Corvair".Now these guys are no spring chickens when it comes to the music scene. All these cats have paid there dues in other bands throughout the years...decades...who are we foolin' they were born when or around the time that this hi-fi stereo on the album cover was probably being made originally, but these guys play as hard and aggressively as a bunch twenty somethings. There age does nothing to hinder their ability to compose, and play such tremendous music that they do.If anything the culmination of their musical maturity has given this excellent output of music a polished touch that can't just be acquired over night. To describe their sound I would say toss in Davie Allen,Tiki Tones,Fifty Foot Combo, and some Memphis soul into a bag, shake it up and you get The High Fidelics.
Kicking things off is "Lil' Curfew Breaker" a rough and tumble dark escape of surf rebellion. The action is tight and flowing with a dabble of punk aggression yet sophisticated. Not easing up in the least the slam bangin' "New Killer Ray" a muderous number with organ swirls, sci-fi guitar, and mega drum flustering aggression.Taking you on a journey to what I can only illustrate as a Hungarian rhythm and beat is "Dance Of The Tiny Knives" sounding somewhat traditional this track is anything but that with all the sludging fuzz oozing from guitar amp,and the double trouble drumming. Harken back if you will to the psychedelic era with the acidic flavored "Black Dahlia" a song that excites and mellows in the same exercise. The bombastic drumming here is nothing short of phenomenal, and the transfused mix of warm organ, hypnotic trance guitar makes for unique experience.Looking to groove in circles of exotic intoxication well "Mondo Rondo" has all the surefire ingredients to make that fantasy happen.Slow grinding sexual rhythms, and fuzzy hormonal guitar with just enough primal juice to attract the nearest female..Good luck Don Juan! I'm not sure if "Aquestrienna" reminds me of The Atlantics,or The Shadows, but it really doesn't mater I suspect it's both to tell you the truth.Yet another display of tremendous drumming fluctuations, and floating guitar rhythms.Almost safe to say I hear some Laika and the Cosmonauts here as well.Taking you on a magic carpet ride is the Arabic mystery of "The Theme From Kismet" a sitar/guitar driver with fuzzy funk smoke dreaminess and seduction. Fans of The Mutants and Fifty Foot Combo take note with this track. With "Midnight Requisition" the rumble in the jungle demands attention with it's constant punky bass throbbing and well timed reverb gestures. With a sweeping dragnet of fuzzadelics "Spy Smasher" is swarming with crime and danger.Enough can't be said about the beat down Ken Adams gives his drums toward the end of this track ..Wow! The party ain't over gang! The High Fidelics lay out a infectious go-go battery with "Bad Jacket'' a walloping good time groover with ample shimmy's and shakes. This song will stick in your head well after this CD sadly stops. But good news the band is gearing up for yet another release later year, but now get yourself a copy of this shockingly amazing collection from The High Fidelics.

Pirato Ketchup "That's Right!" EP [2013]

Well you can't accused these five Belgian musicians of coming up with a run of the mill average band name,no Pirato Ketchup will certainly get people to take notice. If the name means something special in Belgium I'm not aware of it. Jumping off the plank first is "That's Right!" a step lively number that instantly transforms your hips into a washing machine. The catchy riff-age sounds friendly had harmless so it's safe for all ages. Blending fuzz and reverb guitars has always went together like peanut butter and jelly if you ask me,and "Bikini Bitch Party" is slathered in it unashamedly.I was almost fooled into thinking the fuzz guitar on the track sounded like a honking saxophone.I wonder if they intentionally did that on purpose? The triple ax attack really hits it's stride on the track "Los Tres Tikis" a well balanced concoction of reverb zest, and a busy beat.Nice cooking, and with a great arrangement My favorite track here is the heavily fuzzed out dose of "Kelly Johnson".Not sure if they are playing a ode' to the famous aerospace engineer or someone else,it doesn't really matter the action here is fast and mysterious. There is actually a part that slows down a bit, then out of nowhere you hear two giant fuzz guitars sweep in and try to bite your face off. Sadly this spicy aural meal is over way too soon. There is good news for those that are interested. They released their first appetizer back in 2010 called "Speed Surfer" that is every bit as tasty.I should also point out that the CD packaging is rather unique to say the least. The front label on the disc looks like a ViewMaster reel with various pics of the band, and the CD itself is ketchup red. Enjoy!

Kill,Baby... Kill ! -Corridor X [2012]

Anniston, Alabama's Kill,Baby...Kill ! have just dropped a warhead on the world of surf instrumental music with it's first full length album. The founder, and lead guitarist of this band Noah Holt has certainly been working hard promoting and perfecting his diabolical creation that is KBK.Earning  his punk rock badge in the club scene for quite a spell,Noah found a new quest upon surf instro music, and I'm sure glad that he did.Now it's no secret that I absolutely love Man Or Astro-Man? and love other bands that sound in the same vein as them.KBK fits the bill as close to format without totally ripping them off as they come in the recent years. With that said let's proceed with the platter before us "Corridor X" a tale or foreseen vision of our future. The title track comes screeching out like a leaked toxic gas, then the explosion erupts with punky bass drive, skin searing guitar bites, and a beat that demands urgency. The frenetic pace only gets more serious as they drift in and out of different threat levels.Great opener! The sci-fi horror track "Occupation Of The Body Snatchers" will certainly be making this years Rock Is Dead /R.I.P. Halloween comp [which reminds me I need to get started on].The clever sound effects delved out by the band makes for a convincing mysterious alien beam sucking up humans back to their spaceship for unspeakable experiments. The probing fury of Noah's guitar is unsanitary reverb at it's finest, and your ears will thank you for the infection.Taking only a gasp of air,and we are now in the midst of "Meltdown In Sector 9" a queasy organ driven number that melts flesh on contact. The radioactive guitar will easy remind you that you forgot your protective suit. This band really breaks down flesh like it's a fashion statement. In the classic surf direction of things "Hunting For The Dead" is the closest track to the formula of yesteryear, yet with a modern rave-up.I could certainly hear The Avengers VI rock this out in a simular manner. The Brash and steely edged reverb of "Suppose The Doomsday Cults Were Right" make for a teeth grinding, fist clinching good time. The drums are super tough, and tight.Did I mention a huge MOAM? influence? This track like many others here was from their debut EP except I think they have all been re-recorded,or remixed. The difference is subtle at times but very noticeable at others.Next up is the inspired track from the famous Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" where William Shatner plays a passenger who see's a gremlin on the airplane wing...you remember that one right? Anyway KBK take us back to that moment of the frightening sight and recreate it with "Something On The Wing" sound samples and all,but by golly they really tap back into the MOAM? 1000x ore vein without even realizing I think. It's a good thing to me because like I said....The song only borrows from the masters, not completely coping it note for note mind you. It's like a disease most bands wish they could get,but KBK has totally embraced it ,and they flourish it wildly. "Love Theme For A Twisted Mind" a blistering rip roaring full on reverb assault that kinda reminds me of modern surf legends The Madeira. The tune takes a sudden turn in direction around the half way point, adding melody overload, then cutting back to the original menacing drive. If I had to pick one track to represent the talent of this group it would be"Turn Your Insides Out".The song starts off with a spine tingling organ run, then the nail biting anticipation of the heart beating drums, and swatting guitars then suddenly it leads into a grotesque display of power chords, and malicious rhythmic melodies. Getting to know Noah Holt over the past few years via the internet I somehow should have seen this one and only cover track coming "Ant Invasion" by Shadowy Men From A Shadowy Planet originally titled "Aunt's Invasion" just to be cute.KBK totally nail it with out sounding just like a "drone" see I can be cute too!. Moving on,and regenerating dead bodies like it's nobody's business is chemically strong "Trioxin Twins" double the insanity cause everything seems to have taken on a overload of cool with this track, the pace is frantic only to take a brief la-la in westernville, then it's back the zombie apocalypse feeding fury of bone chopping drums, and angry blood thirsting guitar slurping. Like I said in my first review of "Psycho Beach Party" the organ parts remind me of MOAM?'s "Your Weight On The Moon" era. The last and possibly my favorite track on the album is "Duck And Cover" even though it starts out on the same path as the rest of the music here it took me by surprise with the tripping synth keyboard sprinkles around and at the end of the song. Now that was a spring in the right direction. There is a bonus song at track 100,but it's a real quickie that you'll have experience for yourself.

Twang-O-Matics "Death Grip"/"Werewolf" 7" [Hack Shack Records] 2013

Norway's Twang-O-Matics are back with yet another bone shakin' release.A little over six months ago the band release their sophomore release with "Fretboard Mojo" a instant  modern surf classic in my book. With this release the band steer towards a sinister depth with these two creepers. Side A "Death Grip" comes on like a bloodthirsty creature lurking in the shadows with the doghouse bass serving as pulse seeker. The guitars certainly have that distinctly familiar Halloween  reverb death rattle most of us expect. The B-side is a cover of The Frantics classic "Werewolf".Eddie Angel of Los Straitjackets fame brought this tune to my attention back in the mid nineties. As for this version the band give it their now signature tone while remaining true to the original. As with every release so far the artwork is done by the infamous Darren King Merinuk.I give away the fate of the band from the monster's death grip, but you'll just have to buy the record to find out. For purchasing of this horrorific record,or if you're needle shy and want only the MP3's follow these links. http://www.thetwangomatics.com/page9.html

It saddens me to also tell you about the passing of Twang-O-Matics drummer/engineer Mathias Johnsen.Guitar player Nils Tempo has informed the surf community last week of this tragic news.My deepest condolences go out to his family, and bandmates. R.I.P. Mathias
